Jakarta, November 12, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia has urged the international community to strengthen cooperation in ensuring inclusive, human-centered, and equitable governance of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly for the benefit of developing nations.
The call was made by Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, during her address at the 11th MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation Forum held in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday.
Puan highlighted Indonesia’s recognition of AI as a strategic technology with the potential to drive future economic growth, while also acknowledging its substantial energy demands and associated risks. She emphasized that AI could serve as a key enabler in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We recognize the opportunities AI offers to accelerate development, as well as the risks it poses — particularly the widening technological gap between rich and poor countries,” she said.
The Indonesian parliamentary leader urged MIKTA member parliaments — comprising Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Türkiye, and Australia — to promote accountability and ethical oversight in technological governance. She noted that AI is increasingly influencing legislative functions, underscoring the importance of setting clear parameters for data collection, use, and management.
“Parliaments must ensure that accountability remains in the hands of elected human representatives,” Puan stressed. “We must preserve digital inclusion so that AI does not become a privilege reserved for only a few countries or social classes.”
She further warned that as climate disruptions intensify and global energy systems come under growing strain, AI continues to reshape the global economy. Without proactive policy frameworks, she cautioned, the ongoing technological transition could deepen inequality rather than reduce it.
“The transition to cleaner energy must uphold justice, resilience, and dignity,” Puan concluded. “AI must be managed in a way that empowers society, with its benefits shared rather than concentrated.”
The MIKTA Speakers’ Consultation Forum serves as a platform for dialogue and cooperation among middle-power democracies to address global governance, technological transformation, and inclusive development.
