Banda Aceh, December 7, 2025 – The Europe Today: The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) confirmed on Saturday that the death toll from the catastrophic flash floods and landslides across three provinces in Sumatra has climbed to 914, marking an increase of 47 fatalities since Friday.
Abdul Muhari, Head of BNPB’s Data, Information, and Communication Center, reported the updated figures during a press briefing, noting the rapid rise in casualties as rescue teams continue operations in the worst-affected regions.
Aceh Records Highest Number of Fatalities
Aceh province remains the hardest hit, with 359 confirmed deaths. North Sumatra follows with 329 fatalities, while West Sumatra has reported 226 deaths.
Muhari stated that search and rescue efforts have been intensified in an attempt to locate survivors and reduce further loss of life. Teams are working under challenging conditions as the affected areas remain difficult to access.
Hundreds Still Missing
Across the three provinces, 389 people remain missing, according to the latest list released by the Search and Rescue (SAR) teams. This marks a decrease from Friday, December 5, when 521 individuals were still unaccounted for.
Muhari noted that the data is being updated continuously as some missing individuals have been found or have reported themselves safe.
He expressed hope that the number of missing people will continue to decline as operations progress: “Our teams are working tirelessly, and we remain hopeful that more people will be located in the coming hours and days.”
The disaster has prompted nationwide mobilization of emergency services, with authorities urging continued vigilance as the region braces for the possibility of further weather-related hazards.
