London, December 03, 2023, The Europe Today: Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued by the UK Met Office.

National Highways has advised people to be as prepared as possible when travelling on the roads this winter after cars were abandoned in heavy snow in Cumbria.

National network manager at National Highways Dale Hipkiss said: “Keeping a kit of essential items like a torch and warm clothes in your vehicle can be vital in case you and your passengers become stranded.

“Freezing conditions bring so many hazards such as snow and ice, please take every possible step to understand your journey in advance and allow extra time when travelling.”

Meanwhile, the Met Office said icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths may result in “some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces”.

‘Thirty minute journey took nine hours in snow’

One woman from Cumbria has described how it took her nine hours to complete a journey that normally takes 30 minutes last night.

Kendal resident Hannah Smith said she had never seen such heavy snow in Ambleside and Grasmere.

She said she decided to abandon her car and walk to the nearest train station in Windermere after waiting in traffic with two eight-year-old children for four-and-a-half hours on Saturday night.

The communications manager said: “Rather than sleeping on the floor of a church or a community centre, we were just going to walk as long as it takes to get near the train station.

“We were quite lucky in that sense because the kids had walking boots and we knew they could walk.”

While hundreds of people abandoned their cars in the heavy snowfall this weekend, one person came up with a genius way to get to the shops – taking her horse Mary.

Dee Ormston, from Cumbria, told Sky News: “We couldn’t get a car down the farm lane so Mary was the only all terrain vehicle for the job.”

She posted on Facebook: “They really don’t get much better than Mary… the only mode of transport to get to Tesco.

“She passed cars, wagons, tractors and all sorts sliding around in the deep snow. Parking wasn’t the best but she was well rewarded with carrots afterwards.
