Urumqi, January 10, 2024, The Europe Today: Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, situated in the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, achieved a remarkable milestone by handling over 25 million passenger trips in 2023, solidifying its position as the busiest single-runway airport in China. Amid Xinjiang’s burgeoning tourism market, marked by a record-breaking 265.44 million visits in 2023, the airport experienced significant growth, ranking first among China’s single-runway airports.
Boasting 484 daily takeoffs and landings on average, the airport operates 227 regular passenger routes, catering to both domestic and international travel. To meet escalating passenger demands, an expansion project, including a new terminal, is underway, aiming for an annual passenger throughput capacity of 48 million and a cargo handling capacity of 550,000 tonnes upon completion.
As Xinjiang continues to enhance its aviation infrastructure, the region remains a crucial transportation hub in the core area of the Silk Road Economic Belt, connecting diverse destinations and fostering economic development.
