Israel to Reprimand Ambassadors Over Palestinian State Recognition Plans

Jerusalem, May 23, 2024, The Europe Today: On Thursday, Israel will reprimand the ambassadors of Ireland, Norway, and Spain over their governments’ plan to recognize a Palestinian state next week, according to an Israeli official. The envoys have been summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, where they will be shown a previously unpublished video of Hamas militants taking female captives during the October 7 attack on Israel that triggered the ongoing Gaza war.

In response to the planned recognition, Israel has also recalled its own ambassadors from Dublin, Oslo, and Madrid for consultations. This diplomatic move comes amid escalating violence in the occupied West Bank and increasing Israeli resistance to relinquishing territories sought by Palestinians for statehood. U.S.-sponsored negotiations for a two-state solution have been stalled for a decade.

The governments of Ireland, Norway, and Spain announced on Wednesday their decision to recognize a Palestinian state on May 28, stating their intention to contribute to securing a Gaza truce and reviving peace talks. The announcement has intensified the already strained relations and sparked significant controversy in the region.
