Geneva, June 02, 2024, The Europe Today: China has expressed strong support for Palestine to assume a more significant role within the World Health Organization (WHO), stated Chen Xu, China’s permanent representative to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland.
Chen delivered these remarks during his address at the 77th World Health Assembly (WHA) on Friday. The WHA had earlier adopted a draft resolution on “aligning participation of Palestine in the WHO with its participation in the UN,” with a vote tally of 101 in favor, five against, and 21 abstaining.
Chen highlighted the recent decision by the UN General Assembly’s emergency special session, which passed a resolution by an overwhelming majority, recognizing Palestine’s qualification for full UN membership. Chen welcomed this resolution, asserting that it represents the will of the international community.
China’s envoy emphasized that the two-state solution is the only realistic approach to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, noting that granting Palestine full UN membership is a crucial step towards this objective.
Chen urged all parties to acknowledge the legitimate concerns and needs of the Palestinian people and to adopt an objective and fair stance, ensuring that Palestine has the opportunity to make substantial contributions to the WHO.
“China views the two-state solution as the only realistic path to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and granting Palestine full UN membership is an important step towards this goal,” Chen stated.
China’s call for enhanced Palestinian participation in the WHO aligns with its broader diplomatic stance, advocating for increased recognition and rights for Palestine within international organizations.
