Berlin, July 22, 2024, The Europe Today: The German Foreign Office has issued a stern advisory urging its citizens to refrain from traveling to Bangladesh amidst escalating civil unrest and violence. In an official statement released Sunday, the ministry cited a newly imposed curfew and severe disruptions to communication services as reasons for the travel warning.
According to the statement, “There is a curfew in place following violent clashes, and internet and mobile services are blocked.” The Foreign Office expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh, predicting further escalation. Reports indicate that more than 100 individuals have lost their lives in the ongoing demonstrations and protests.
In light of these developments, German nationals currently in Bangladesh are strongly advised to register with the crisis preparedness list to ensure their safety and facilitate communication with local authorities.
The advisory from Germany follows similar warnings from the United States, where the State Department cautioned against travel to Bangladesh and announced plans to evacuate some diplomatic personnel and their families. The decision by the US came in response to the imposition of a new curfew on Friday, following days of deadly unrest that claimed over 105 lives.
Additionally, the French AFP news agency reported significant arrests related to the civil disturbances. Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Faruk Hossain confirmed, “At least 532 people have been arrested over the violence,” including leaders of the opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP).
The German Foreign Office continues to monitor the situation closely and advises German citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Bangladesh until further notice. For those currently in the country, adherence to local laws and heightened vigilance are strongly recommended.
