Australian Hockey Player Arrested in Paris for Alleged Cocaine Purchase

Paris, August 07, 2024, The Europe Today: Australian hockey player Tom Craig has been arrested in Paris for allegedly purchasing cocaine, according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office. The incident reportedly took place shortly after Craig’s participation in the 2024 Olympics.

The 28-year-old athlete, who recently played in the Australian team’s quarterfinal defeat to the Netherlands, was apprehended in Paris’ ninth arrondissement near an apartment building. Police officers surprised Craig and a suspected 17-year-old dealer during the alleged transaction. Craig was reportedly found in possession of one gram of cocaine at the time of his arrest.

The Paris prosecutor’s office provided details on the incident, stating that the transaction allegedly occurred during the night between August 6 and 7. The local police arrested both the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia. Craig, whose birthdate is September 3, 1995, matches the description given by the authorities.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed that a member of the Australian hockey team is in custody, though no charges have been filed yet. “The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member,” a spokesperson stated.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has declined to comment on the arrest at its daily press conference, citing the ongoing investigation.

As the investigation unfolds, further details are expected to emerge regarding the circumstances of the arrest and the potential legal consequences for Craig. The Australian Olympic Committee is closely monitoring the situation and providing necessary support to the athlete during this challenging time.
