Thailand to Host Pioneering APEC Workshop on Sustainable Tourism Management in Conservation Areas

Bangkok, August 09, 2024, The Europe Today: In a significant stride towards promoting sustainability, Thailand is set to host a landmark workshop titled “Beyond Carrying Capacity: Best Practices in Sustainable Tourism Management in Conservation, Fragile, and Protected Areas.” The event, scheduled for July 30-31, 2024, at The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok, will convene key stakeholders across the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) region to share and explore cutting-edge practices in sustainable tourism.

The workshop is organized by the Department of Tourism under Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, with financial backing from the APEC Fund. It aims to highlight innovative strategies for mitigating the impacts of tourism on conservation, fragile, and protected areas. By presenting best practices and encouraging collaborative discussions, Thailand is reaffirming its leadership in promoting tourism that not only drives economic growth but also safeguards environmental integrity.

Participants will engage in interactive sessions and group discussions focused on practical solutions to advance sustainability and resilience in tourism across APEC economies.

The workshop is aligned with the APEC Tourism Strategic Plan 2020–2024 and supports APEC’s broader goals, including the Putrajaya Vision 2040 and the Aotearoa Plan of Action. It also contributes to the Bangkok Goals on the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy, emphasizing environmental conservation and the responsible use of natural resources.

The findings and recommendations from the workshop will be compiled into a comprehensive “Handbook on Sustainable Tourism Management in Conservation, Fragile, and Protected Areas.” This publication, to be made freely available on the APEC website, will serve as a vital resource for government agencies, academic institutions, stakeholders, and tourism site managers across the APEC region.

The Department of Tourism, Thailand, anticipates that this workshop will mark a significant advancement toward achieving sustainability and resilience in tourism within the APEC region.
