Biden Announces New Military Aid Package for Ukraine Ahead of Independence Day

Kyiv, August 24, 2024, The Europe Today: US President Joe Biden held a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, marking a significant gesture of support for Ukraine as it approaches its Independence Day on Saturday. During the call, President Biden unveiled a new military aid package valued at $125 million (€112 million), reinforcing Washington’s commitment to Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who also engaged in discussions with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on the same day, highlighted the details of the aid package via social media. The assistance includes essential military resources such as air-defense missiles, counter-drone equipment, anti-armor missiles, and ammunition, according to a statement from the White House.

In his conversation with President Zelenskyy, President Biden reiterated the United States’ “unwavering” support for Ukraine. This new package reflects the continued and robust backing from Washington as Ukraine confronts the challenges posed by the Russian invasion, which began in February 2022.

The US State Department reported that, to date, Washington has allocated over $55 billion in military assistance to Kyiv since the onset of the full-scale invasion. The latest aid package underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations and the commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and defense.
