Dresden, September 11, 2024, The Europe Today: Local authorities reported that a section of the Carola Bridge in downtown Dresden collapsed early Wednesday morning. The Carola Bridge, one of four crossings over the Elbe River in the city center, is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in the eastern German city.
City officials stated that, due to the early hour of the incident, no one was on the bridge at the time, and thus there were no injuries. However, both road and river traffic on this crucial waterway will be halted for an undetermined period.
Additionally, two Dresden tram lines that also utilize the bridge will be operating with reduced service. The last tram had crossed the bridge just 18 minutes before the collapse at 3:08 a.m.
Fire brigade spokesman Michael Klahre mentioned in a video message later on Wednesday morning, “There is still an acute danger to life and a risk of further collapse.”
