Minsk, September 16, 2024 — The Europe Today: Belarus is planning to significantly expand the number of international observers for its 2025 presidential election, according to Igor Karpenko, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC). Karpenko shared these plans during an interview on the STV TV channel on September 15, as reported by BelTA.
“We intend to invite a larger pool of international observers for the 2025 presidential election, including from the central election bodies of countries with which we cooperate through the Association of World Election Bodies,” Karpenko said. He noted that while it would be impossible to invite all 120 member countries, Belarus is keen to extend its invitation beyond the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries.
Karpenko also highlighted Belarus’ active role in observing international elections, stating that representatives from the Belarusian CEC have monitored recent elections in Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Russia. “Our cooperation with Russia, for instance, includes working closely with the CEC as well as territorial election commissions, such as that of Leningrad Oblast,” he added.
This initiative reflects Belarus’ broader efforts to engage with international election bodies and share election monitoring expertise through global partnerships.
