China Responds to EU’s WTO Challenge Over Dairy Products Anti-Subsidy Investigation

Beijing, September 24, 2024 – The Europe Today: The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOC) announced on Monday that it has received the European Union’s (EU) consultation request via the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding China’s anti-subsidy investigation into imports of EU dairy products.

In a formal statement, the MOC expressed regret over the EU’s decision to challenge the investigation through the WTO dispute settlement mechanism. However, China affirmed that it will address the matter according to the relevant WTO rules.

“As a member of the WTO, China has always approached trade remedy measures with caution and restraint to ensure fair and free trade,” the MOC’s statement emphasized.

China initiated the anti-subsidy investigation last month in response to an application from its domestic dairy industry. The probe covers specific EU dairy products, including fresh cheese, curd, and blue cheese, and will examine the potential damage to the Chinese dairy sector from January 1, 2020, to March 31, 2024.

The Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of its domestic industries in compliance with both Chinese laws and international trade regulations.
