Wuhan, September 25, 2024 — The Europe Today: World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is set to return to the court at the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open, following her withdrawal from recent tournaments in Seoul and Beijing due to personal reasons, confirmed her manager in an interview with Polish media on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Polish tennis star, who was last seen competing at the US Open earlier this month, where she lost in the quarterfinals to Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4, expressed disappointment over her inability to participate in the China Open in Beijing, where she was the reigning champion.
“For personal reasons, I have to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing. I’m very sad because I had a great time there and won last year. I couldn’t wait to go back there. The fans will be able to see great tennis there. I regret I won’t be part of it,” Swiatek said in a statement quoted by the WTA.
Paula Wolecka, Swiatek’s PR and Communications manager, confirmed Swiatek’s participation in the Wuhan Open, set to take place from October 7 to 13 at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center. However, she noted that no final decision has been made regarding Swiatek’s involvement in the Billie Jean King Cup tournament in Malaga, Spain, later this year.
Swiatek’s return to action at the Wuhan Open will mark a significant moment for fans eager to see the top-ranked player in the world back on the court.
