Malaysia to Prioritize High-Tech Foreign Investments with Focus on AI and Data Technology, Says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim

Kuala Lumpur, September 26, 2024, Europe Today: Malaysia is adopting a more selective approach to foreign direct investments, emphasizing projects that bring significant benefits, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and data technology, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking at the Ilmuan Malaysia Madani Forum organized by Tenaga Nasional Bhd on Wednesday, Anwar noted that traditional data centers relying on cheap energy and water are no longer sufficient. “Now, if you want to establish a data center, AI must be a core component,” he said, citing the example of Nvidia’s operations in Johor as a model of advanced technology integration.

Anwar stressed the importance of empowering universities in Malaysia to produce a skilled workforce, particularly in AI and engineering, to meet the needs of high-tech investors. “If the investment is substantial, we are more selective, ensuring it provides greater benefits to the country,” he explained.

Regarding the upcoming national budget, Anwar highlighted education and health as the key priorities, with the largest allocations directed towards these sectors. Education will receive the highest funding, followed closely by health, underscoring the government’s commitment to long-term development.
