Duisburg Emerges as Key Hub in China-Europe Railway Express, Strengthening Economic Ties

Duisburg, October 4, 2024 — The Europe Today: Thirteen years after the launch of the China-Europe Railway Express (CRE), Duisburg has solidified its position as a pivotal hub in international logistics. The railway, which connects China and Europe, has significantly boosted the German city’s economy and logistics industry, with growing recognition of its speed and reliability.

During a visit by Xinhua reporters, the bustling activity at Duisburg’s terminals and logistics centers highlighted the city’s transformation. One of these centers, AUKLogis GmbH, a German subsidiary of Chinese logistics company Western Post, now provides storage and customs clearance services for CRE clients. Fan Yuliang, the warehouse manager, noted a shift in local traders’ attitudes, moving from skepticism to trust in the railway’s efficiency, fostering long-term partnerships.

“Clients often highlight the railway’s speed and reliability, which are unmatched by other freight methods,” Fan said. As the service expands, more businesses are recognizing its value.

Daniele Materazzo, part of the outbound operations team at AUKLogis, shared his positive experience, saying, “Despite language and cultural differences, we support each other as a team. I feel completely at home here.”

Markus Bangen, CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG (Duisport), emphasized the CRE’s role in strengthening economic ties between Europe and China. Duisburg’s growing status as a key stop on the railway has attracted investment, created jobs, and stimulated growth in the logistics sector.

In August, a direct route from Chongqing to Duisburg via the Caspian Sea was introduced, providing a new transportation option through the Middle Corridor, a trade link passing through Central Asia and the Caucasus. Bangen noted that familiarity with CRE operations would accelerate the corridor’s development.

The CRE has not only facilitated faster and more cost-effective delivery of goods but also opened new trade pathways for European businesses entering the Chinese market. Chinese Consul General in Düsseldorf, Du Chunguo, praised the railway for improving consumer welfare and creating jobs along its route.
