Turkmenistan Seeks Stronger Cooperation with SCO in Transport, Energy, and Trade

Islamabad, October 17, 2024 – The Europe Today: Turkmenistan sees significant opportunities to strengthen cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in key sectors such as transport, communications, energy, trade, and investment, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov said during the Council of Heads of Government meeting in Pakistan on Wednesday.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Meredov emphasized the importance of collaborative projects, notably the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, which aims to enhance regional energy security.

Additionally, the “North-South” transport corridor, connecting Turkmenistan to Iran and India via the eastern Caspian Sea coast, was highlighted as a critical route for boosting regional trade. Meredov underscored the potential of this corridor to strengthen economic ties between SCO member states.

Participants at the meeting discussed avenues to increase trade and business contacts, while Turkmenistan also stressed the significance of cultural and humanitarian collaboration in promoting cooperation.

Meredov extended gratitude to SCO member nations for their active participation in the recent International Forum in Ashgabat, held in honor of the 300th anniversary of the Turkmen poet and philosopher Magtymguly Pyragy.
