Indonesia and Thailand Commit to Strengthening Cooperation at BRICS Summit

Kazan, October 24, 2024 – The Europe Today: Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, and his Thai counterpart, Maris Sangiampongsa, have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation at both regional and global levels. The two ministers met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, held on October 23-24, to discuss deepening collaboration through various international platforms.

In a statement released by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, it was noted that Sugiono and Sangiampongsa agreed to bolster ties through regional mechanisms like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and global forums such as the United Nations (UN) and BRICS.

Sugiono emphasized the strategic importance of Indonesia-Thailand relations and encouraged continued cooperation through existing bilateral and multilateral mechanisms. On ASEAN matters, the ministers exchanged views on the ongoing situation in Myanmar, agreeing that a swift resolution is critical. Sugiono highlighted the need for inclusive, collaborative efforts involving all stakeholders in Myanmar, underlining the importance of maintaining ASEAN’s solidarity and centrality in light of evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Sangiampongsa expressed Thailand’s desire for Indonesia to continue playing a key leadership role in the region, particularly in navigating complex challenges.

The ministers also discussed the strategic potential of BRICS as a platform for developing economies to drive global economic growth. Established in 2010 by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS expanded in January to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Next year will mark the 75th anniversary of Indonesia and Thailand’s diplomatic relations, further underscoring the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
