China Calls for U.S. to Halt Arms Sales to Taiwan, Citing Threats to Stability

Beijing, October 27, 2024 — The Europe Today: China has urged the United States to immediately cease its arms sales to Taiwan, emphasizing that such actions threaten peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This statement was made by a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry in response to the U.S. Defense Department’s recent announcement approving $1.988 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, which includes advanced missile systems and radar technology.

The spokesperson condemned the U.S. arms sales, stating that they severely violate the one-China principle and contravene the three China-U.S. Joint Communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique of 1982. The spokesperson further asserted that these sales infringe upon China’s sovereignty and security interests, harm bilateral relations, and embolden separatist forces advocating for “Taiwan independence.”

China has formally expressed its strong opposition to the U.S. decision and lodged solemn representations with Washington. The spokesperson highlighted that using Taiwan as a means to contain China and further the agenda of “Taiwan independence” contradicts U.S. leaders’ commitments against supporting such independence and undermines efforts to stabilize China-U.S. relations.

In closing, the spokesperson reiterated China’s demand for the U.S. to halt its military support for Taiwan and warned that China will undertake resolute countermeasures to protect its national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.
