Acknowledging the long-standing relationship between Moscow and Islamabad, Ms. Matvienko emphasized the importance of continued dialogue, even during challenging times. She highlighted the shared approach between Russia and Pakistan on numerous international issues, particularly concerning Afghan stability, Central Asian security, and broader global security concerns. She noted both countries’ alignment on preventing the militarization of space, prohibiting weapons of mass destruction, and opposing sanctions that hinder humanitarian cooperation.
The Speaker also extended congratulations to Pakistan for securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-26 term, recognizing Pakistan’s consistent commitment to the UN’s core principles. She expressed confidence that Pakistan’s experience, balanced perspective, and dedication to UN peacekeeping would contribute significantly to global security and peace.
Ms. Matvienko further remarked on Pakistan’s interest in BRICS, praising the grouping’s shared values of equality and mutual respect. She also advocated for increased parliamentary collaboration through multilateral forums, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, to strengthen legislative ties.
On the economic front, Ms. Matvienko highlighted the strong foundation laid during the Soviet era when Russia supported Pakistan’s energy and agricultural sectors, particularly through projects like the Pakistan Steel Mills in Karachi. Bilateral trade between Russia and Pakistan witnessed remarkable growth, exceeding $1 billion last year with an additional increase of 13% this year. The energy sector was noted as a key area of cooperation, with Russia recently supplying crude oil and expanding grain exports to Pakistan to bolster food security.
Transportation was also identified as a promising field of cooperation, with Russia welcoming Pakistan’s participation in the North-South International Transport Corridor, which aims to strengthen connectivity between Northern Eurasia and the Global South.
In the cultural domain, the Speaker referenced Pakistan’s rich literary connection with Russia, mentioning Urdu poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s contribution to translating Russian poetry and building cultural ties. Ms. Matvienko emphasized that both countries are now witnessing a revival in cultural exchanges, with growing collaboration in science, higher education, and youth programs.
Ms. Matvienko further noted the positive impact of Pakistan’s recent visa fee waiver for Russian tourists, anticipating a boost in tourism and goodwill between the two nations.
The Speaker concluded by underscoring the importance of interfaith and interethnic dialogue, with Russian legislators actively working to uphold traditional values and support families, particularly in light of Russia’s designation of 2024 as the “Year of the Family.” The visit marks a renewed chapter in Pakistan-Russia relations, aimed at fostering cooperation across diplomatic, economic, cultural, and social dimensions.
