Sepang, October 29, 2024 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for Malaysia to maintain vigilance in its fight against corruption, cautioning against complacency by comparing the nation’s progress with “banana republics.” Speaking at the launch of DHL Express’ RM300 million Kuala Lumpur Gateway facility, Anwar underscored that while anti-corruption efforts have made substantial strides, there remains room for improvement.
“We must avoid contentment and complacency. If we continue to compare with the past or with lesser standards, we risk inheriting a culture of mediocrity,” Anwar stated. He encouraged a critical approach toward assessing anti-corruption initiatives, stressing that reform requires serious study of global best practices rather than satisfaction with marginal improvements.
Highlighting Malaysia’s efforts to build a comprehensive business ecosystem, Anwar expressed confidence that initiatives in logistics, transportation, ports, and aviation will attract greater foreign investment. He emphasized the importance of robust infrastructure in positioning Malaysia as a competitive player in the global market.
In addition, Anwar celebrated Malaysia’s recent acceptance as a partner nation in the BRICS group, marking a significant step in enhancing Malaysia’s global standing. Malaysia was reportedly prioritized for acceptance, a move endorsed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other BRICS leaders, according to Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali, who recently visited Malaysia.
“Malaysia was the first country nominated, leading to immediate applause from BRICS members when our name was announced,” Anwar said, underscoring the achievement as a source of national pride and a testament to Malaysia’s commitment to global cooperation. Malaysia joins other recent BRICS partners, including Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, following the nomination at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, held from October 22-24.
