Beijing, November 2, 2024 – The Europe Today: President Xi Jinping met with Sam Hou Fai, the newly elected chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), on Friday at the Great Hall of the People. During the meeting, Premier Li Qiang, under the witness of President Xi, formally presented Sam with a decree from the State Council appointing him as the sixth-term chief executive of the Macao SAR.
President Xi extended his congratulations to Sam on his appointment, commending his steadfast dedication to the country and Macao, his conscientious service, and his significant contributions to the region’s prosperity and stability during his extensive tenure as president of Macao’s Court of Final Appeal.
“In the election, you were nominated and elected by an overwhelming majority, which demonstrates the broad recognition and support from the society of Macao. The central authorities fully acknowledge this and have full trust in you,” President Xi affirmed.
Reflecting on the 25 years since Macao’s return to the motherland, Xi praised the successful implementation of the “one country, two systems” policy with Macao-specific characteristics. He emphasized the central authorities’ continued commitment to fully and faithfully upholding this principle, which ensures a high degree of autonomy for Macao under its own administration.
President Xi reminded Sam of the weighty responsibilities accompanying his new role and urged him to lead the new SAR government with a strong sense of mission. He called on Sam to unite various sectors of Macao society and to strive for continuous advancements in the practice of “one country, two systems” with unique Macao characteristics.
Expressing his gratitude, Sam Hou Fai pledged his unwavering commitment to President Xi and the central government. He promised to fully and faithfully implement the “one country, two systems” principle and to lead Macao toward comprehensive and sustained development.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Premier Li Qiang, Cai Qi, and Ding Xuexiang.
