Baku, November 11, 2024 – The Europe Today: The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) is set to begin in Baku, marking the first time Azerbaijan’s capital hosts this major global summit. Over the next 12 days, from November 11 to 22, more than 67,000 participants, including heads of state and delegations from around the world, will convene to address pressing climate issues, with a special focus on the South Caucasus region.
With extensive preparations spanning over 11 months, Baku is poised to become a key stage for discussions on climate challenges and solutions. The summit aims to highlight urgent topics such as climate financing, renewable energy initiatives, and emission reduction measures, underscoring Azerbaijan’s commitment to climate leadership.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is among the nearly 100 global leaders expected to attend. Emine Erdogan’s “Zero Waste” initiative will also be showcased, emphasizing regional efforts toward environmental sustainability. Deputy Minister of Energy and COP29 CEO, Elnur Sultanov, highlighted Azerbaijan’s comprehensive preparations and expressed hope for a successful event that could yield significant political, social, and economic benefits for the nation.
