Minsk, November 14, 2024 – The Europe Today: Belarus has expressed strong support for creating a parliamentary framework within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and for strengthening similar cooperation within the BRICS alliance, stated Sergei Aleinik, Chairman of the Standing Commission of the Council of the Republic on International Affairs and National Security. Aleinik made the comments following a joint meeting of his commission and the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs.
Aleinik highlighted the significance of such meetings in fostering collaborative approaches and mapping out paths for greater international inter-parliamentary cooperation. “Today, we covered a broad spectrum of issues related to engagement with international parliamentary organizations, including the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia, the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and regional structures,” he remarked. Belarus aims to expand its parliamentary interactions with countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, according to Aleinik.
The meeting showcased a strong alignment of perspectives and shared strategies for addressing pressing regional and global issues, noted Aleinik. “There is a consensus that geopolitical focus is shifting towards Greater Eurasia, making security a top priority. The II Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security is further evidence of this trend,” he explained.
Aleinik affirmed Belarus’ commitment to active participation within the SCO and BRICS, advocating for a strengthened parliamentary component in both organizations. This, he suggested, would bolster regional cohesion and promote joint efforts in tackling global challenges.
