Lima, November 14, 2024 – The Europe Today: Vietnamese State President Lương Cường met with Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra in Lima on Wednesday during his official visit to Peru. The meeting marked a significant moment in bilateral relations as the two countries celebrated the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
President Boluarte welcomed President Cường, highlighting the importance of his visit as the first by a Vietnamese head of state to Peru. She expressed hope that it would propel their partnership to new heights of cooperation and development. Cường reiterated Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening ties with Peru, emphasizing the nation’s policy of independence, multilateralism, and robust international engagement.
Both leaders acknowledged the strong momentum in their relations, including continuous high-level exchanges and effective collaboration through existing mechanisms like the Deputy Foreign Minister-level Political Consultation and the Intergovernmental Committee. They praised the resilience of bilateral trade and economic ties despite global challenges, with Peru recognized as Vietnam’s sixth-largest trading partner in Latin America.
Cường noted the untapped potential for expanding trade and investment, particularly through mutual benefits under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). He urged the Peruvian government to facilitate Vietnamese investment, which Boluarte welcomed, particularly in digital transformation, smart city development, and logistics around the Chancay port.
The leaders pledged to enhance cooperation in key sectors, including trade, defense, telecommunications, agriculture, digital transformation, and climate change. They agreed to facilitate business collaboration and deepen ties in multilateral forums, upholding principles of peace and international law. President Boluarte expressed her hope for the establishment of a Vietnamese diplomatic presence in Lima.
The talks concluded with the signing of trade promotion agreements and a joint statement to further strengthen bilateral relations. President Cường extended an invitation for Boluarte to visit Vietnam, which she accepted.
