Brazilian President Lula Accepts Invitation to 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur

Rio De Janeiro, November 18, 2024 – The Europe Today: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has officially accepted an invitation to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur in 2025 as the Guest of the Chair. The announcement was made by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his official visit to Brazil.

“The invitation was gladly accepted by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,” said Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, in a joint statement.

Prime Minister Anwar expressed his appreciation to President Lula for hosting Malaysia as a guest country at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where Anwar represented Malaysia alongside 16 other guest nations, including Qatar, Singapore, Spain, and Vietnam.

The G20 Summit, which brings together 19 countries and two unions— the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU)—serves as a platform for addressing global economic and developmental issues.

Anwar’s visit to Brazil follows his attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru. Accompanying him were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz.

The visit also coincides with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Brazil, highlighting robust bilateral ties rooted in shared values of peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.

Brazil is Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner and export destination in the Latin American and Caribbean region, as well as its largest import source. In 2023, Brazil ranked as Malaysia’s 20th largest trading partner globally, 29th largest export destination, and 17th largest import source, underscoring the importance of economic collaboration between the two nations.

The 47th ASEAN Summit in 2025 is expected to further enhance Brazil-Malaysia relations and strengthen Brazil’s engagement with Southeast Asia through ASEAN’s multilateral framework.
