Former National Cricketer and Umpire Muhammad Nazir Junior Passes Away

Lahore, November 21, 2024 — The Europe Today: Former national cricketer and umpire Muhammad Nazir Junior has passed away at the age of 78, after a prolonged battle with serious health complications. His son, Noman Nazir, confirmed the news today.

Nazir Junior, who represented Pakistan in 14 Test matches and 4 One Day Internationals (ODIs), was a respected figure in the cricket community, both for his contributions as a player and his later role as an umpire. He officiated in 15 One Day and 5 Test matches during his career, earning admiration for his professionalism and commitment to the sport.

A former off-spin bowler, Nazir Junior was notably the first spinner to take the most wickets in the first innings of his debut Test match. Over the course of his career, he claimed 37 wickets in international cricket, earning him a place in the annals of Pakistan’s cricketing history.

In recent years, Nazir Junior had been struggling with the long-term effects of a severe traffic accident that occurred five years ago, leaving him with lasting injuries. His health deteriorated significantly in the final days of his life, as he battled a chest infection and ascites while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Lahore.

Earlier, Noman Nazir had appealed to the government and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for support, urging them to ensure his father received the medical care he urgently needed. The PCB, which had previously assisted the family, was once again called upon by Noman during this difficult period.

The cricketing community, along with fans across Pakistan, has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a beloved figure who contributed both as a player and an umpire. Heartfelt condolences have been sent to his family in this time of mourning.
