Berlin, December 7, 2024 – The Europe Today: Germany is intensifying efforts to counter digital threats as the nation prepares for its general election on February 23, 2025. Concerns have been raised about potential hack-and-leak operations and disinformation campaigns designed to influence public opinion and undermine democratic processes.
In a recent report, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency flagged the risk of foreign interference, warning of “attempts by foreign states to exert influence” on the electoral process. This sentiment was echoed by Claudia Plattner, president of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), who cautioned against forces seeking to disrupt the democratic order.
“There are forces inside and outside Germany that have an interest in attacking the election process and disrupting the democratic order,” Plattner stated during a press briefing.
Authorities are particularly concerned about the potential for coordinated cyberattacks targeting political parties, government institutions, and the media, as well as the spread of misleading or polarizing content through social media platforms.
The Federal Election Commissioner’s Office and cybersecurity experts are collaborating to enhance digital defenses, ensuring the integrity of voting systems and public communication. Citizens are also being urged to critically evaluate online information during the election period.
The upcoming election, which will see Germany elect a new parliament, is considered a crucial moment for the country, making it a likely target for malicious actors aiming to exploit vulnerabilities in the digital space. German authorities remain vigilant, determined to safeguard the democratic process against any threats.
