Lahore, December 7, 2024 – The Europe Today: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday emphasized the strategic importance of maritime security, reaffirming Pakistan Navy’s readiness to defend the nation’s sea boundaries. Addressing the closing session of the 7th National Maritime Security Workshop (MARSEW) at the Navy War College in Lahore, the Prime Minister lauded the Navy’s pivotal role in maintaining national security and its proactive measures to harness maritime resources for economic prosperity.
Highlighting the significance of the blue economy, PM Sharif described it as vital for Pakistan’s economic progress. He identified Gwadar Port, due to its strategic location, as a cornerstone of the nation’s economic future and a key player in promoting regional trade and connectivity. Stressing the need to streamline operations at the port, the Prime Minister expressed the government’s commitment to facilitating importers and exporters.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged China as a vital partner in Pakistan’s maritime development, expressing gratitude for its steadfast cooperation. He emphasized modernizing the Karachi Port Trust to enhance its global competitiveness in handling consignments and announced plans to re-establish the National Shipping Corporation to align with commercial needs.
PM Sharif expressed optimism about Pakistan’s immense talent and resources, underscoring the necessity of their effective utilization to overcome economic challenges and reduce dependence on debt.
On national security, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism across the country. He paid tribute to the sacrifices of the armed forces in anti-terrorism operations and highlighted the role of regular Apex Committee meetings in ensuring peace and security.
Earlier, upon arrival, PM Sharif was received by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf. In his welcome address, Rear Admiral Azhar Mahmood, Commandant of the Pakistan Navy War College, provided an overview of the workshop’s activities.
The event featured a panel presentation of recommendations for a National Maritime Policy, addressing challenges and opportunities in Pakistan’s maritime domain. The participants—parliamentarians, policymakers, bureaucrats, academics, entrepreneurs, armed forces officers, and media representatives—analyzed the maritime environment’s impact on national security and economic prosperity.
The Maritime Security Workshop, organized annually by Pakistan Navy, aims to enhance understanding of maritime security dynamics, create awareness about the blue economy, and explore Pakistan’s untapped maritime potential.
