Indonesia and UK Strengthen Forestry Cooperation to Support FOLU Net Sink 2030

Jakarta, December 11, 2024 – The Europe Today: The Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, met with the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, in Jakarta to advance cooperation between the two nations in support of Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 strategy.

“We are deeply committed to addressing climate change through the Indonesia FOLU Net Sink 2030 initiative,” Antoni said in a statement from his office on Wednesday.

Collaboration to Combat Climate Change

The cooperation between Indonesia and the United Kingdom encompasses a range of initiatives, including the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade in Timber Products Agreement (FLEGT VPA), the Multistakeholder Forestry Partnership (MFP Programme), sustainable forest funding mechanisms, and partnerships involving social forestry and the private sector.

Antoni highlighted the continuation of collaboration through international platforms such as United Nations conferences and the G20, underscoring the critical role of global cooperation in achieving shared environmental goals.

Indonesia’s Key Contribution

Antoni emphasized that Indonesia’s forestry and land use sectors are integral to the country’s climate strategy, contributing almost 60 percent of the national emission reduction target. He reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to enhancing collaboration and synergy with stakeholders to meet this ambitious goal.

“This ministry is mandated to contribute almost 60 percent of the total national emission reduction target,” he noted, stressing the importance of sustainable forestry practices and emission reduction measures.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Ambassador Jermey acknowledged the longstanding collaboration between Indonesia and the United Kingdom in the forestry sector. He expressed gratitude for the progress achieved and optimism for continued cooperation to reach shared objectives.

“The UK and Indonesia have supported each other to achieve various goals. I am grateful for the collaboration over the years and look forward to achieving more together,” Jermey stated.

Targeting FOLU Net Sink by 2030

Indonesia aims to achieve a FOLU (Forestry and Other Land Use) Net Sink by 2030, a state where carbon absorption exceeds emissions in the forestry and land use sectors. This goal is pivotal, as these sectors are significant contributors to emissions, second only to the energy sector.

The meeting reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation, paving the way for enhanced efforts in combating climate change and promoting sustainable forestry practices.
