Beijing, December 13, 2024 – The Europe Today: President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the central authorities’ full support for Hong Kong’s alignment with national strategies and its efforts to foster new economic momentum during a meeting with Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), John Lee, in Beijing on Friday.
Chief Executive Lee, in the capital for a duty visit, presented a report on Hong Kong’s current situation and the HKSAR government’s recent achievements.
Commitment to “One Country, Two Systems”
President Xi emphasized the central government’s unwavering commitment to the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. He highlighted its importance in maintaining Hong Kong’s unique status while fostering its integration into national development.
“The central authorities will fully, firmly, and accurately implement the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy,” Xi said. He expressed confidence in the HKSAR government’s ability to unite and lead all sectors of society in pursuing reforms, innovation, and prosperity.
Recognition of Governance Achievements
Commending Chief Executive Lee’s leadership over the past year, President Xi praised the HKSAR government for its commitment to responsibility and effective governance.
“In the past year, the HKSAR government has accomplished historic milestones under Article 23 of the Basic Law, prioritized economic development, addressed critical livelihood issues such as housing and healthcare, enhanced external cooperation, and elevated Hong Kong’s international reputation,” Xi noted.
He emphasized that these efforts have consolidated Hong Kong’s momentum toward stability and development, acknowledging the effectiveness of Lee’s administration in achieving tangible results.
Focus on Reform and Innovation
President Xi highlighted the new opportunities available to Hong Kong as it aligns with national strategies, particularly under initiatives such as the Greater Bay Area development plan. He encouraged the HKSAR government to pursue prosperity through innovation and creativity, leveraging Hong Kong’s unique strengths to contribute to the nation’s overall development.
“The central authorities fully recognize the work of Chief Executive John Lee and the HKSAR government,” Xi concluded, expressing optimism for Hong Kong’s future.
