Spanish Chargé d’Affaires to Thailand Discusses Frigate Construction and Naval Cooperation with Royal Thai Navy

Bangkok, December 22, 2024 – The Europe Today: Spanish Chargé d’Affaires Vicente Cacho López de la Calzada met with Navy Chief Admiral Jirapol Wongwit on Saturday to discuss bilateral cooperation, including plans for frigate construction in Thailand. The courtesy call also served to congratulate Admiral Jirapol on assuming his new role on Friday.

The discussions focused on advancing naval technology and education collaborations. Key topics included the transfer of Spain’s CATIZ combat system technology for restoring the HTMS Chang and HTMS Pattani offshore patrol vessels, as well as expanding scholarships for Thai naval personnel, universities, and research institutions.

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is preparing to request a budget for 2026 to construct two new frigates after funding was cut for the past two years. The Spanish envoy confirmed the readiness of Navantia, a state-owned Spanish shipbuilder, to undertake the project.

Mr. López de la Calzada emphasized Navantia’s financial stability and strong credentials in shipbuilding and maintenance. Admiral Jirapol also affirmed the RTN’s confidence in Navantia, citing the company’s successful history of constructing ships for the Spanish Navy and exporting to international clients.

Navantia, with subsidiaries in the UK, Australia, and Saudi Arabia, recently delivered five vessels to the Royal Saudi Navy and has plans to deliver three more ships within the next five years. With a registered capital of nearly 9 billion baht, Navantia remains a reliable partner for major naval projects worldwide.

The discussions mark a significant step toward strengthening Thailand-Spain defense and education ties, with both sides committed to fostering long-term collaboration.
