Beijing, January 7, 2025 – The Europe Today: China has extended warm congratulations to Indonesia on becoming a full member of BRICS, marking a significant development in global South-South cooperation, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.
Brazil, serving as the BRICS chair for 2024, officially confirmed Indonesia’s membership in a statement that garnered widespread attention from the international community.
The Chinese spokesperson acknowledged Indonesia’s prominent role as a major developing nation and a vital force in the Global South. They emphasized Indonesia’s longstanding alignment with the BRICS spirit, citing its active participation in “BRICS Plus” initiatives as a testament to its commitment to the bloc’s principles.
“Indonesia’s official entry into BRICS aligns with the collective interests of BRICS countries and the Global South,” the spokesperson stated. “We are confident that Indonesia will make a meaningful contribution to the growth and development of BRICS.”
The spokesperson underscored BRICS’s role as a key platform for fostering solidarity among Global South nations and advancing multilateralism, fairness, and justice. They added that the latest expansion reflects the broader trend of the Global South’s collective rise in global governance.
