Saudi Arabia and Greece Advance Energy Cooperation with Electrical Interconnection Project

Riyadh, January 9, 2025 – The Europe Today: Saudi Arabia and Greece are taking significant strides in energy collaboration, with the electrical interconnection project serving as a cornerstone of their efforts. Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman highlighted the initiative as a testament to the shared commitment of both nations to enhancing cooperation in the energy sector.

“This effort has resulted in the establishment of a special purpose company, the Saudi-Greek Interconnection Company, along with continuous progress in the feasibility study of the project,” Prince Abdulaziz stated. He made the remarks while co-chairing the first session of the Energy Committee on Wednesday with Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis. The committee operates under the Saudi-Hellenic Strategic Partnership Council.

Feasibility studies for the Greece-Saudi Arabia electrical interconnection, also known as the Saudi-Greek Interconnection, are currently underway and are expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The ambitious project aims to connect Europe with the Arabian Peninsula for the first time, marking a significant step in regional and international energy integration.

During the virtual meeting, both sides reviewed key areas of collaboration under the Energy Committee, including electrical interconnection, energy efficiency, renewable energy, clean hydrogen, carbon capture and reuse, and advancements in the Saudi-Greek fiber optic cable system.

Prince Abdulaziz emphasized that bilateral relations received a substantial boost following the 2022 visit of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman to Athens. The visit facilitated the signing of several pivotal agreements, including a memorandum of understanding to foster energy projects such as electrical interconnection and circular carbon economy technologies.

The Saudi-Greek partnership underscores the growing alignment between the two nations in addressing global energy challenges, promoting sustainability, and enhancing technological innovation in the energy sector.
