Los Angeles, January 11, 2025 – The Europe Today: Authorities in Los Angeles County have declared a local health emergency due to poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke and ash enveloping the region.
In a statement, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced the emergency declaration alongside a public health order, citing “severely degraded air quality” as a result of the fires and strong winds. The statement warned that the conditions pose “immediate and long-term risks to public health,” according to media reports.
The wildfires have forced evacuations of residents and healthcare facilities, disrupting critical health services and resources. In response, the public health order includes a ban on the use of power air blowers, such as leaf blowers, which can stir up ash and further worsen air conditions. Vulnerable groups, including those with respiratory conditions, older adults, children, and pets, are at heightened risk.
Residents are advised to stay indoors with windows and doors closed, use air conditioners to filter and recirculate indoor air, and wear masks when venturing outside in smoky conditions. Pets should also be kept indoors to avoid exposure.
The emergency underscores the escalating impact of the wildfires on public health and safety, as authorities work to contain the blazes and mitigate the health risks posed to the region’s residents.
