PM Chính Hosts Official Welcome Ceremony for Russian PM Mishustin in Hanoi

Hanoi, January 14, 2025 – The Europe Today:  On Tuesday, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính presided over an official welcome ceremony for Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Vladimirovich Mishustin, who is on an official visit to Vietnam from January 14 to 15.

This marks PM Mishustin’s first visit to Vietnam and the first official visit by a high-ranking foreign leader to the country in 2025.

The ceremony included the saluting of national flags, a review of the Vietnam People’s Army guard of honour, and introductions of the high-level delegations from both countries. Following the formalities, the two leaders toured a photo exhibition showcasing the landscapes, people, and bilateral relations of Vietnam and Russia. Jointly organised by the Government Office and the Vietnam News Agency, the exhibition highlighted the deep-rooted connections between the two nations.

During their talks, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership as the countries approach the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties (January 30, 1950 – 2025).

Discussions focused on reviewing existing cooperation, addressing challenges, and advancing key collaborative projects in energy and industry. Both sides emphasized the importance of expanding partnerships in promising sectors, fostering a robust foundation for future relations.

The strong political trust between the two nations, built on longstanding friendships and frequent exchanges at all levels, was highlighted as a cornerstone of their relationship. Mechanisms such as the Intergovernmental Committee on Economic-Trade and Scientific-Technological Cooperation have played a pivotal role in enhancing collaboration. Additionally, Vietnam and Russia have maintained close coordination in multilateral forums and international organisations.

Bilateral trade has witnessed significant growth, driven by the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union, which came into effect in October 2016. Trade volume rose from USD 3.63 billion in 2023 to USD 4.57 billion in 2024. As of November 2024, Russia had invested in 199 projects in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of approximately USD 990 million, ranking 26th among foreign investors. Conversely, Vietnam’s 16 investment projects in Russia total USD 1.6 billion, making it the fourth-largest investor in the country.

The visit underscores the enduring bond between the two nations, including the contributions of the approximately 60,000 Vietnamese people living in Russia. By enhancing their cooperation, Vietnam and Russia aim to unlock new opportunities for mutual growth and prosperity in the years ahead.
