Western Azerbaijan Community Urges Belgian Government to Respect Right of Return for Azerbaijanis Expelled from Armenia

Baku, February 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Western Azerbaijan Community has expressed concerns regarding the recent political developments in Belgium, following the signing of a coalition agreement on February 1, 2025, after seven months of political crisis. According to a statement from the community, the coalition agreement includes provisions that are deemed “unconstructive and discriminatory” towards Azerbaijan and its citizens.

The statement highlights that the agreement contains references to “Nagorno-Karabakh,” which the community believes undermines the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It also mentions the issue of facilitating the return of Armenians who had emigrated from Azerbaijan, but notably fails to address the plight of Azerbaijanis who were forcibly expelled from Armenia.

The Western Azerbaijan Community condemned this as a form of ethnic and religious discrimination, asserting that the exclusion of any mention of the Azerbaijani refugees displaced from Armenia represents unjust bias against Azerbaijanis. The community also expressed disappointment in Belgium’s political focus on issues unrelated to its own national affairs, urging the Belgian government to instead prioritize addressing its internal political crisis, which has persisted for several months.

The statement concluded with a call for the newly formed Belgian government to cease discriminatory actions against Azerbaijanis and to avoid steps that could undermine peace and stability in the region. It also emphasized the need for respect for the right of return of Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia, urging Belgium to align its policies with international law and human rights standards.
