Rome, February 15, 2025 – The Europe Today: The office of Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has welcomed the announcement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding plans to trigger an emergency clause allowing governments to increase military spending without it being counted towards budget deficit limits.
In an official statement, Meloni’s office expressed satisfaction over this initiative, emphasizing that Italy has long advocated for such a move under the Stability Pact.
“This is a first, fundamental step in the right direction, which must be followed by the establishment of common financial instruments,” the statement read.
The Italian government reaffirmed its commitment to working constructively with European institutions and other member states to achieve these objectives, particularly in light of the upcoming presentation of the EU Defence White Paper.
