London, February 17, 2025 – The Europe Today: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated his readiness to send British troops to Ukraine if necessary to ensure the security of Britain and Europe.
In an article published in the Daily Telegraph on Sunday, Starmer emphasized the UK’s leading role in supporting Kyiv in the ongoing war against Russia. “This also means being ready and willing to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary,” he wrote.
Starmer acknowledged the gravity of such a decision, saying, “I do not say that lightly. I feel very deeply the responsibility that comes with potentially putting British servicemen and women in harm’s way.” He underscored that any effort to help guarantee Ukraine’s security directly contributes to safeguarding Europe and the UK itself.
The prime minister confirmed his participation in a high-level meeting in Paris on Monday, where European leaders will discuss concerns over US efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. He also announced plans to meet with US President Donald Trump “in the coming days,” reinforcing the UK’s pivotal role in ensuring strong cooperation between Europe and the United States.
“US support will remain critical, and a US security guarantee is essential for a lasting peace, because only the US can deter President Vladimir Putin from attacking again,” Starmer stated.
The meeting in Paris is expected to bring together the heads of government from Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Leaders are gathering ahead of the third anniversary of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine on February 24, amid concerns that a settlement imposed by Washington could leave Putin emboldened and Europe vulnerable.
“We are facing a once-in-a-generation moment for the collective security of our continent,” Starmer warned. “This is not only a question about the future of Ukraine—it is existential for Europe as a whole.”
Starmer reiterated that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is “irreversible” and called on European nations to increase defense spending and take on a greater role within the alliance to reinforce regional security.
