Indonesia Advances Carbon Credit Market with Nature-Based Solutions

Jakarta, February 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesia is promoting the supply of carbon credits derived from nature-based solutions, particularly emissions stored in peat ecosystems, according to Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono.

Speaking at the Indonesia Climate Policy Outlook 2025 event, organized by the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) in Jakarta on Thursday, Hendropriyono highlighted Indonesia’s participation in the global carbon trade network. He noted that the country launched its international carbon trade transactions at the Indonesian Stock Exchange in January.

However, he acknowledged that carbon trading activities have yet to reach optimal levels.

“Perhaps the market is looking for nature-based solutions. Not only are they renewable, but their prices may also be more competitive and marketable. So, now we are seeking as much supply as possible from nature-based solutions, including peatlands,” Hendropriyono stated.

To facilitate international carbon trade, Indonesia is optimizing the National Registry System (SRN) while preparing the necessary infrastructure and related instruments.

“But I think it is not just a matter of supply but also of interest in carbon itself,” he added.

Hendropriyono further noted that the international community has raised concerns regarding the recognition of certification institutions. In response, the Indonesian government is working to enhance demand by pursuing mutual recognition arrangements (MRAs) with various global stakeholders.

As part of these efforts, Indonesia signed an MRA with Japan, which was officially launched last year during the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan.
