Johannesburg, February 21, 2025 – The Europe Today: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, on Thursday on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, to discuss the strengthening of China-Russia relations.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era is progressing to higher levels and broader dimensions. He highlighted the steady progress in mutually beneficial cooperation and the close and effective strategic coordination between the two nations, which he said plays a crucial role in safeguarding their common interests and advancing global multipolarity.
China, Wang stated, remains committed to fully implementing the key agreements reached by the two heads of state and further strengthening bilateral relations in the new year.
Lavrov, in turn, reiterated Russia’s willingness to enhance high-level exchanges with China and deepen practical cooperation in trade, finance, culture, and other sectors. He stressed that both countries serve as stabilizing forces in an increasingly complex global landscape and share a commitment to supporting multipolarity.
The Russian foreign minister also praised China’s global initiatives and reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to strengthening coordination with China under various international frameworks, including BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the United Nations, and the G20.
During their discussions, the two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual concern, including the situation in the Middle East.
The meeting reaffirmed China and Russia’s strategic alignment and commitment to fostering closer cooperation in global governance and regional stability.
