Germany Reopens Embassy in Damascus After 13-Year Closure

Damascus, March 20, 2025 – The Europe Today: Germany has officially reopened its embassy in Damascus after a 13-year closure, marking a significant diplomatic shift, Syrian media reported on Thursday. The reopening coincides with a visit by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, underscoring Berlin’s renewed engagement with Syria.

Baerbock’s trip, her second to Syria since the collapse of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, facilitated the reestablishment of the German diplomatic mission. German media, citing Baerbock, reported that a limited diplomatic presence of fewer than ten personnel will be stationed at the newly reopened embassy.

During her visit, the German Foreign Minister held high-level meetings with Syrian leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Foreign Affairs Chief Asaad Al-Shaibani, and representatives of Syrian civil society. Discussions reportedly focused on bilateral relations, regional stability, and Germany’s potential role in Syria’s post-war reconstruction efforts.

Baerbock also toured the Jobar neighborhood in Damascus, an area that suffered extensive damage during the civil war, reflecting Germany’s continued interest in Syria’s reconstruction and humanitarian situation.

Germany initially closed its embassy in Damascus in 2012 following the outbreak of Syria’s civil war. The recent reopening aligns with a broader trend among European nations, as Italy and Spain have also reinstated their diplomatic missions in the Syrian capital.

The move is seen as part of Germany’s broader foreign policy approach towards fostering dialogue and supporting Syria’s rebuilding efforts while maintaining diplomatic pressure for political reforms. Further developments are expected as Berlin navigates its renewed engagement with the country.
