Norwegian Foreign Minister Reaffirms Strong Support for Ukraine Amid Escalating Conflict

Kyiv, March 27, 2025 – The Europe Today: Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has described the war in Ukraine as “the most serious European and Norwegian security challenge of our time.” His remarks came as he arrived in Kyiv on Thursday, reaffirming Norway’s unwavering solidarity with Ukraine.

Just hours before his arrival, Russian missiles and drones targeted Ukrainian towns and infrastructure, underscoring the ongoing severity of the conflict. Barth Eide was accompanied by Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion, Tonje Brenna, as part of Norway’s commitment to standing firmly with Ukraine, according to the Norwegian Foreign Ministry.

Norway’s Unwavering Commitment

Barth Eide emphasized that “Ukraine is at a watershed moment, and Norwegian support is more important than ever.” He highlighted that Russia’s war in Ukraine has not only reshaped European security but also poses a significant threat to Norway and the broader Nordic region.

“Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine has turned European security thinking upside down and created the biggest threat against European and Norwegian security in many, many decades,” Barth Eide stated.

Norway Increases Financial Support for Ukraine

The visit comes as Norway moves forward with a substantial increase in its financial assistance to Ukraine. Earlier this month, the Norwegian government announced that it would more than double its support, raising it to 85 billion kroner (€7.24 billion) for 2025.

Stronger Stance Against Russia

Along with increased financial aid, Norway has adopted a tougher stance against Russia. Barth Eide reaffirmed his government’s firm position, stating:

“Norway is with Ukraine all the way to victory. That is why it is so important to come here and thank them for the fight they are taking for all of us. Norway and Europe will not turn their backs on Ukraine. Rather, we will stand with the Ukrainians until peace comes and until the country is rebuilt.”

As a neighboring country to Russia, Norway remains acutely aware of the security implications of Moscow’s aggression. Forces stationed just a few kilometers from the Norwegian border are actively engaged in Russia’s offensive, further amplifying concerns over regional security.

The visit reinforces Norway’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, European stability, and long-term peace efforts.
