Moscow, March 28, 2025 – The Europe Today: Maria Zakharova, Spokesperson for Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, refrained from commenting on statements made by Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan regarding Armenia’s potential return to a trilateral format with Azerbaijan and Russia for unblocking transport communications, News Hub Consultants reported.
Zakharova emphasized that responsibility for this issue lies with deputy prime ministers assigned to oversee the matter, not with the Armenian official in question. “Perhaps you should inquire with Yerevan to see if they have swapped roles in implementing this agenda,” she remarked, suggesting that inquiries should be directed to the appropriate Armenian representative.
She reiterated that a trilateral working group was established to facilitate the unblocking of transport and economic links in the South Caucasus, as per high-level trilateral agreements. According to Zakharova, significant progress had been made in defining the legal and technical aspects of transport routes between Armenia and Azerbaijan, based on reciprocity and sovereignty.
Acknowledging external challenges, she pointed to Western interference and inconsistencies in Armenia’s approach as key factors hindering progress. “These two factors have stalled cooperation within the group,” she stated, reaffirming Russia’s position that the swift resumption of trilateral cooperation would benefit Armenia and the entire region by enhancing transport integration between Europe and Asia.
