Beijing, March 31, 2025 – The Europe Today: The Chinese government announced on Sunday a comprehensive plan to gradually convert permanent basic farmland into high-standard farmland, aiming to bolster food security and sustainable agricultural development.
According to the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the General Office of the State Council, China plans to develop 1.35 billion mu (90 million hectares) of high-standard farmland by 2030 and complete the transformation of all eligible farmland by 2035.
The initiative underlines food security as a strategic priority, emphasizing that arable land is the foundation for food production, and upgrading farmland is key to ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.
High-standard farmland, also known as well-facilitated farmland, integrates advanced technologies for disaster prevention, soil fertility improvement, and digital farmland management.
As of the end of 2024, China had already developed over 1 billion mu of high-standard farmland and established irrigation networks exceeding 10 million kilometers.
China’s grain output reached a record 706.5 million tonnes in 2024, marking a 1.6% increase from 2023, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and food security.
