Greenland’s PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen Rejects US Interest in the Arctic Territory

Nuuk, March 31, 2025 – The Europe Today: Newly elected Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has firmly stated that the United States will not acquire Greenland, reaffirming the island’s self-governance and independence.

“We do not belong to anyone else,” Nielsen declared in a Facebook post, emphasizing that the people of Greenland alone will determine the island’s future.

His statement comes in response to renewed interest from the US, particularly from President Donald Trump, who has previously expressed a desire to purchase Greenland, citing its strategic Arctic location and resource wealth as critical to US national and global security.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, holds significant geopolitical and economic importance, particularly due to its rich mineral reserves and its location in the Arctic—a region of growing international competition.

Despite its autonomy, Greenland remains a territory of Denmark, which is a close US ally and NATO member. However, Greenlandic leaders have consistently pushed back against suggestions of US ownership, reaffirming their commitment to self-determination.
