Leaders of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan Visit Historic Khujand Fortress

Khujand, April 1, 2025 – The Europe Today: As part of the cultural program of the regional summit in Khujand, the Presidents of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan visited the historic Khujand Fortress, exploring its rich historical and cultural significance.

The origins of this unique fortress date back to the 6th-5th centuries BCE, with archaeological excavations confirming its initial construction during that period. Following its reconstruction in 1999, a regional history museum was established adjacent to the fortress, now housing over 28,000 exhibits.

During the most recent restoration, extensive work was carried out, including the rebuilding of the fortress walls, citadel, and gates. Additionally, an administrative building and artisan workshops were constructed, along with replicas of traditional Khujand courtyards to preserve the cultural heritage of the region.

A complex featuring five exhibition halls dedicated to the history and culture of the Tajik people was also developed. Visitors can explore eight artisan courtyards where craftspeople engage in calligraphy, painting, textile production, stone carving, blacksmithing, and pottery.

During their visit, the heads of state attended an exhibition showcasing traditional crafts, agricultural products, and national cuisine from the three countries. The event also featured performances celebrating the region’s rich cultural traditions, further highlighting the shared heritage and cooperation between Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
