US Imposes Reciprocal Tariffs on Indonesia and Over 100 Other Countries

Jakarta, April 3, 2025 – The Europe Today: The United States, under President Donald Trump’s administration, has announced a near-universal tariff on imported products, with Indonesia among the affected nations.

As published on the White House’s official Instagram account and confirmed on Thursday, Indonesia has been subjected to a 32-percent import tariff under the newly implemented “reciprocal tariff” policy.

The policy, which targets Indonesia and at least 100 other countries, was introduced in response to what the US government claims are excessive import tariffs imposed by these nations on American goods. According to US officials, Indonesia currently enforces a 64-percent import tariff on US products.

Other Southeast Asian countries have also been impacted by the tariff measures, with Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia facing tariffs of 49, 46, 36, and 24 percent, respectively. Additionally, the Trump administration has levied a 10-percent base tariff on various other nations, including traditional trade partners such as the United Kingdom, while the European Union faces a 39-percent tariff.

Speaking on the policy, President Trump hailed the move as a “Liberation Day” for the United States, asserting that the new tariffs are designed to protect domestic industries and generate more jobs for American workers. He further argued that the US has long been disadvantaged by “unfair trade practices” imposed by foreign countries.

Since his return to the White House in January, President Trump has enacted several trade restrictions, including a 25-percent tariff on all imported cars and additional levies on steel and aluminum products manufactured outside the US.

According to a White House official, the universal 10-percent tariff is set to take effect on Saturday, April 5, while the reciprocal tariffs against Indonesia and other affected nations will be enforced starting Wednesday, April 9.
