Indonesia, France Reaffirm Strong Economic Ties Amid Global Trade Shifts

Jakarta, April 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron have agreed to maintain and strengthen bilateral economic and trade relations in response to the United States’ recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs on several countries.

The commitment was made during a telephone conversation on April 4, just two days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the new tariff policy. The dialogue between the two leaders focused on the importance of continued cooperation, with an emphasis on inclusive and sustainable development.

In a statement shared via his official social media account @prabowo, President Prabowo emphasized that the Indonesia–France strategic partnership not only serves both nations’ national interests, but also supports regional and global stability and prosperity.

“In my discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron, we agreed to continue promoting inclusive and sustainable economic development for the welfare of our people,” Prabowo wrote. “Let’s enhance our synergy and build a future for mutual progress.”

President Macron echoed the sentiment on his official social media account @EmmanuelMacron, announcing plans for a state visit to Indonesia at the end of May.

“We have decided to strengthen the relationship between our countries with ambitious and forward-looking projects,” Macron said. “This historic approach we are preparing will come into realization during my state visit.”

Macron added that the two countries will deepen cooperation in defense, economy, science, and culture, and expand collaboration in education.

Beyond bilateral ties, both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to global peace, specifically supporting efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine and promote stability in the Middle East.

The renewed Indonesia–France partnership signals the countries’ shared desire to navigate shifting global dynamics with resilience and cooperation, positioning their alliance as a pillar of stability in an increasingly complex international landscape.
