Samarkand, April 6, 2025 – The Europe Today: The First Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ilkhom Norqulov, held a high-level meeting with Gianpiero Nacci, Managing Director for Climate Strategy and Delivery at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), on the sidelines of the Samarkand Climate Forum.
The discussions focused on advancing the implementation of Uzbekistan’s $200 million decarbonization strategy and the key initiatives outlined in the Memorandum of Cooperation on transitioning to a green economy. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic cooperation in the areas of sustainability and climate resilience.
Particular emphasis was placed on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across industry, agriculture, services, and manufacturing. The parties explored measures to enhance energy efficiency, adopt sustainable development principles, and secure international certification to boost the country’s export potential.
A key topic of the meeting was the implementation of the EBRD’s Star Venture Program in Uzbekistan. The program is designed to accelerate the growth of innovative startups and SMEs by providing grant funding, technical assistance, and expert advisory services. The initiative will also help businesses align with green transformation goals and foster broader international cooperation.
It was noted that the Star Venture Program will be executed in collaboration with government entities, corporate partners, and venture funds, providing a multi-stakeholder platform to strengthen Uzbekistan’s startup ecosystem and support its sustainable development ambitions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties reached an agreement to expand joint efforts in the implementation of green economy projects and sustainable development initiatives throughout Uzbekistan.
